County commissions award contract for Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge project

At the May 27 meeting of commissioners, the Monmouth County Council of Commissioners awarded a contract to build the Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge on Route 520 (Rumson Road) over the Shrewsbury River in the Boroughs of Rumson and Sea Bright.

“Due to the age of the bridge, it has deteriorated over time, and routine maintenance can no longer remedy the shortcomings,” said Commissioner-Director Thomas A. Arnone, Liaison with the Monmouth County Public Works and Engineering Department. “Monmouth County, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, will build the new bridge along the south side of the existing bridge so that we can conserve this vital passage at- above the Shrewsbury River is operational for road and sea traffic throughout the construction period. “

Construction will include bridge replacement and improvements to approaching road intersections to maintain a critical transportation connection between the Boroughs of Rumson and Sea Bright as well as a coastal evacuation route for the community of Sea Bright.

The county received 10 bids and awarded the contract to the lowest responsible bidder, Richard E. Pierson Construction Co., Inc., of Pilesgrove, for $ 107,538,389.20.

“I am happy to inform our taxpayers that this project will be built almost entirely with federal funds,” Arnone said. “The county will receive all but $ 47,400 of the total construction cost of $ 107.5 million in federal grants. The county will also receive a subsidy for inspection, consultation and administration costs. This funding, along with funding already received for design and licensing, will total more than $ 131 million in federal funding. That’s $ 131 million from taxpayers that we don’t have to spend on this very critical bridge replacement project.
